HISTORY

On June, 26, 1964, Katrasgarh, an important centre of Coal business in the district of Dhanbad, saw a new sun smiling at it – Katras College Katrasgarh was established, It was the result of the collective effort of the people of the town that is why it was name after the town itself, -- Katras College, Katrasgarh. It was an act, inspired by the noblest of all human desires – to ensure higher education for the future generations. So it adopted co- education from the day of its establishment  .  

Katras College began to grow and develop slowly but steadily. It was granted permanent affiliation by Ranchi University, Ranchi on June’ 2, 1969. It was registered with the UGC Under Section 2(f) , vide UGC letter no. F -13-10/69 (CD) dt. 10.03.1972, and under 12 (B) on 17.06.1972.

Katras College, Katrasgarh, to develop rapidly when Dr. K. P. S. Choudhary, a great scholar - teacher of Philosophy and an eminent educationist, joined as the Principal on 01.08.1972. The College made a name for itself as a center of quality education. He also established Commerce faculty. The College began to make its marks in the field of games and sports also.

The College was declared a constituent unit of Ranchi University, Ranchi, vide RU letter no. P/21-370409 dt. 10.03.1980. The people of Katrasgarh remember Dr. Choudhary with love and respect.

Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribag was created on 17 September, 1992, and Katras College, Katrasgarh become its constituent Unit At. Present, it is managed and maintained by Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribag.

A golden period in the history of Katras College, Katrasgarh began on 14.02.2004. when Dr. (Late) S. N. Singh joined the College as the Principal. The people of Katrasgarh always remember Dr. S. N. Singh with great love and respect. He was a great administrator and a true leader. He worked ceaselessly for the development of the College. His efforts bore fruit and Katras College, Katrasgarh got its own buildings the College building is a symbol of Dr. Singh’s devotion to the College Dr. Singh retired from service on 30.06.2010 but he is still here in the heart of everyone at Katras.

Katras College, Katrasgarh is still the only constituent College in Baghmara Assembly Constituency. So it serves a very large population. At present, 8740 students are enrolled in Degree Classes in the three faculties of Arts, Commerce and Science for the session 2014 – 2015 and almost 50% of them are girls. At the same time, the College imparts education to 3040 Inter students of Arts, Science and Commerce. Hence Katras College, Katrasgarh, at present, has 11,780 students.

The College faces the challenge of improving its infrastructure. It also requires teachers in every Department.

The challenges are there but the staff members of the College are determined to take the College to new heights of glory. It is proved by the fact that the College has been performing very well in games and sports also. In 2014 its has four Gold Medalists :-

4.       PRIYANKA KUMARI           ----                         Women’s Hammer Throw

Katras College, Katrasgarh has every reason to feel proud of its students who have achieved great glory in both education and sports. It not only teaches but also builds the personality of its students.

Its achievements inspire it to strive for greater glory and so, the College is determined to touch new heights. The Principal and the staff are devoted to their duties for the development of this College.
